The rise of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences by 27 places in the prestigious international Leiden ranking Three universities of medical sciences, Tehran, Shahid Beheshti and Tabriz, have taken the first to third national ranks of the Leiden 2023 ranking system.

In order to evaluate institutions, the rating system shall use 20 indicators across four dimensions of impact, collaboration, openness and gender diversity.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2023 offers important insights into the scientific performance of over 1400 major universities worldwid.   In terms of number of universities, Iran is the first country in the Islamic world to have 46 universities at this rating system. Turkey and Egypt, with 36 and 13 universities respectively, place second and third after the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The review of the ranking of the country's medical sciences universities in the Leiden Global Ranking System in 2023 on the results of the dimension of influence (scientific reference) showed that the three medical sciences universities of Tehran, Shahid Beheshti and Tabriz were ranked first to third in the country.

Twelve universities of medicine have taken part in this evaluation scheme, out of a total 72 medical schools in the country. Kerman and Hamedan University of Medical Sciences have been added to this ranking system in 2023. Compared to last year's Leiden ranking, Tehran University of Medical Sciences has climbed 16 places, Shahid Beheshti University has climbed 27 places, and Tabriz University has climbed 24 places this year.
